A City of Stories

Exploration — Concept

The Challenge
Cities are often represented through infrastructure, statistics and urban development plans, while the lived experiences of residents remain fragmented and unheard. The challenge of A City of Stories was to create an alternative cartography of Heerlen, one that centres personal narratives rather than physical structures. The project asked how a city can be mapped through memory, voice and perspective.

The Concept
Developed during a residency at Greylight Projects as part of Atelier in the City, A City of Stories began as a collaborative initiative in partnership with NS and the Mayor of Heerlen. The project was launched through a public opening event, setting the tone for collective participation.

What started with five in depth interviews quickly expanded to more than twenty conversations. Walk and Talk sessions invited residents to share their stories while moving through the city, allowing place and memory to intertwine. A soundscape was developed to capture the atmosphere and emotional texture of Heerlen, adding an auditory layer to the visual mapping process.

The Outcome
A City of Stories evolves beyond the timeframe of the residency, positioning itself as an ongoing public archive. The final map becomes a collectively authored portrait of Heerlen, celebrating its complexity and diversity. By translating voices into visual and spatial form, the project demonstrates how design can function as a tool for listening, connecting and strengthening civic identity.
