BROOD / PAIN / BROT
The Challenge
Bread is one of the most familiar foods in everyday life, yet the stories behind it often remain unseen. It appears simple, ordinary and close to us, while the journey from soil to grain, from flour to dough, and from labour to shared table is rarely noticed. The challenge of this project was to slow down this everyday object and reveal the people, places and gestures that shape it.
The project began from a curiosity towards bread as more than a product. Within the context of the BROOD / PAIN / BROT festival, bread became a way to look at connection, craft and local food culture. What does bread carry beyond taste? Which hands, landscapes and traditions are hidden inside something we often consume without thinking?
The Concept
The project was developed as a series of three short films, following different moments in the life of bread. Through visits to De Poshoof, Van Tienhovenmolen and Natuurbakkerij BRWAD, the films trace a journey from gathering and growing, to milling and baking.
Rather than explaining bread through facts alone, the films focus on atmosphere, rhythm and human presence. They show bread as something shaped by time, care, knowledge and community. Each location reveals a different layer: the social space around food, the transformation of grain into flour, and the slow attention of the baker.
Together, the films form a quiet portrait of bread as a meeting point between land, craft and people.
The Outcome
The outcome is a three-part film series created for the BROOD / PAIN / BROT festival. The work invites viewers to look at bread not as something ordinary, but as something deeply connected to place, labour and shared culture.
By following the journey from grain to gathering, the project opens up a slower way of looking at food. It encourages attention for the systems, hands and stories that often stay in the background. In doing so, bread becomes more than a daily product. It becomes a carrier of memory, care and connection.
